Memory effects in vibrated granular systems
نویسنده
چکیده
Granular materials present memory effects when subjected to tapping processes. These effects have been observed experimentally and are discussed here in the context of a general kind of model system for compaction formulated at a mesoscopic level. The theoretical predictions agree qualitatively with the experimental results. As an example, a particularly simple model is used for See endnote 1 detailed calculations.

Density-noise power fluctuations in vibrated granular media.
The noise power spectra of the fluctuations in density of a vibrated column of granular material are found to be time dependent. Spectral analysis of these noise power fluctuations shows nontrivial frequency dependences. The noise powers at different frequencies are also found to fluctuate in a partially correlated way. In most instances, the slow variations of the noise are strongly correlated...
متن کاملSurface Waves and Pattern Formation in Vibrated Granular Beds
We present numerical simulations of surface waves in vibrated granular systems. For the simulations we use an event driven (ED) procedure with a non-constant restitution coeecient. The important advantage of a non-constant restitution coeecient is that it allows to circumvent the \inelastic collapse", i.e. the divergence of collision frequency, usually observed in ED simulations of dense and di...
متن کاملDynamics of Vibrated Grains
We study number density distribution and the behavior of time correlation functions in the density of grains for a quasi-two dimensional system of vibrated grains. We study the system at various packing fractions, from low to high. At low densities we recover usual gas like behavior, reflected in a Poissonian statistics for the number density distribution. At higher densities we notice effects ...
متن کاملLinear response of vibrated granular systems to sudden changes in the vibration intensity.
The short-term memory effects recently observed in vibration-induced compaction of granular materials are studied. It is shown that they can be explained by means of quite plausible hypothesis about the mesoscopic description of the evolution of the system. The existence of a critical time separating regimes of "anomalous" and "normal" responses is predicted. A simple model fitting into the gen...
متن کاملGranular Temperature under Segregation in a Vibrated Granular Bed
The dominant mechanism affecting the flow behavior of granular materials is the random motions of particles resulted from the interactive collisions between particles. The velocity fluctuations induce the segregation in granular flows. The different physical properties of granular material were used to investigate the segregation in a vibrated granular bed in this paper. The image processing te...
